Blood Pressure Monitoring

Blood Pressure monitoring

High blood pressure (hypertension) is a risk factor for Cardiovascular Disease; in other words, high blood pressure increases our risk of heart attack, stroke and other health conditions.

The vast majority of people with high blood pressure issues are unaware, and complications of their uncontrolled blood pressure may be already evident. It is important to check for blood pressure routinely as recommended by your GP, especially if there is a family history of Cardiovascular Disease. A diagnosis of ongoing high blood pressure can sometimes be associated with headaches and/or visual disturbances.

However, a one-off blood pressure reading that is high does not mean that you have high blood pressure. Your blood pressure varies throughout the day.

It may be high for a short time if you are anxious, stressed, or have just been exercising.

It is best to have your Blood Pressure confirmed with your Practice Nurse or Doctor.

They may recommend a 24-hour blood pressure monitor or Home Readings over 5 days to confirm, with more accuracy, the true blood pressure (BP) reading / average.

The 24-hour BP monitor:
• Reduces “white coat “ hypertension /blood pressure – ie. Elevated blood pressure during examination due to anxiety or nervousness
• Gives a more true-to-life accurate set of readings
• Day and night-time assessment
• Highly recommended by current international standards

The readings will be analysed by your GP and a more accurate decision regarding appropriate treatment can be made. If you would like to have your blood pressure checked or require additional information on the 24-hour blood pressure test, please contact us today.
